Ice-Ice, Iceland Baby!

My cousins, Scott & Dustin of My Lux Cruises were planning an 2022 Icelandic Cruise for 29 family and friends. This was during the Corona-Virus Shut-Down 2020, and despite a lot of “Hell, No’s” in my head, the improv girl in me spurted a “Yes, and…” from my mouth.

Bravo to them for providing a First-Class, epic adventure and spoiling us with “Scone-O’Clock”, “Solarium Delirium”; you had to drag us out of the warm massage pools while coasting through the icy whale & dolphin infested seas.

My only mishap came visiting the “Icelandic Punk Museum” in Reykjavik. As I was jamming out to Bjork, a pickpocket made off with my iPhone. What’s more punk than that?

I merengued, hit the mark in archery and braved the icy Polar Bear Plunge!

Prince Christian Sound

Newfoundland

Cruising through the Prince Christian Sound, the ancient glaciers had my shutter finger twitching with adrenaline.  Too much beauty to focus on at one time, I heard the Geologist who beat me in Ping-Pong the day before, commenting about the mighty jagged mountains with the gentleman next to me who offered her photo advice about straight lines.  Eavesdropping, I made a corny photo joke about the Scheimpflug Principle that about 1% of the population would get.  Guessing my correct audience, he laughed saying “I knew you were a Professional”.  He introduced himself as Fridrik saying that he, too, was a photographer, and that his brother was a sports photographer.  Having my occasional Scorpio clairvoyant moment, I asked, “Is your brother George Tiedemann?”  His jaw dropped.  Then he replied “Yes.  How would you ever know that?”

“When I was a Photo Assistant to Herman Gerechoff, at the Garden State Arts Center, Herman would teach and treat me to stories being a Press Photographer.  His best friend was the legendary, Sports Photographer George Tiedemann, and Herman always wanted us to meet hoping I could assist George at The Garden, for boxing matches or Knicks Games.  It was in the way back when; a petite girl wasn’t a commodity in this profession.  We never had a chance to connect, and I had always hoped to see Herman’s request come to fruition before he passed”.

Fridrik replied “George was supposed to be on this cruise; he would have been standing next to me with his Nikons.  We were heading to Iceland to visit our mom’s birthplace and visit family.  Unfortunately, he got sick and had to stay home.  I’m going to text him right now to see if he remembers”.  Here I am in the middle of this dramatic landscape, communicating with a hero of mine, surely feeling Herman smiling from the heavens above.  Quite a momentous moment for me.

Just a glacier floating by until... "Holy Smokes, that ice cube is bigger than that boat".  Perspective.  Cue Celine Dion singing the theme from "Titanic" in your head.

One VanderJilt.

It's a dream assignment to collaborate with the ultra-professional REBNY team; James Wheelan, Sandhya Espitia, Sam Spokony, Grace Boak, my old friend, Kari Neering of Berlin-Rosen, & the eagle-eyes of Martha Bear Dallis of Bear Dallis Associates.  Plus, all their numerous team members.  Thank you all so much for your confidence and support. Much appreciated!

My team rocked it. Beginning with a 19-page Google Doc containing links and diagrams, Red Carpet name collection, my Digital Tech Tornadoes turning imagery immediately around in the Green Room, to videographers interviewing guests; so proud of all their efforts.

"The brain is locked in total darkness of course, children, says the voice, it floats in a clear liquid inside the skull, never in the light. And yet, the world it constructs in the mind is full of light; it brims with color and movement.  So how, children, does the brain which lives without a spark of light, build for us a world full of light?  Open your eyes, and see what you can with them, before they close forever."

AMERICAN GRAPHIC. DESIGN AWARD. WINNER.

My talented client, friend and IREON Networking sister, Megan Grand, of MTG Creative Group beat out a throng of contenders to win a major award.  Actually, two!!

First, Graphic Design USA awarded MTG an “American Graphic Design Award” for the Bargold Storage Systems Print Ad Campaign. A blast from concept, to creation.
Then, another dream assignment  recognized; Newport Tower Website for Cushman & Wakefield & BentallGreenOak.  Huzzah!

Major award winners must rise to challenges and obstacles to emerge victorious:

Challenges:

1.  Photographing metallic, specular boxes from within, without revealing the lighting, or having it reflect.  2.  Conceptualizing the themes of each unit to reflect the various lifestyles and state of storage needs for their residents.  What fun conversations ensued.

Thankfully, I had photographed the Bargold team for a Mann Report cover where I had placed the guys inside one of their units.  Then, based my experience lighting them, upon lighting the interiors and exteriors.  After consulting with knowledgable peers, and a test run, climbing inside storage unit, I was able to formulate a beautiful lighting recipe.

Step one locked in, introductions were made to Megan at MTG as I knew she would be a perfect fit for the Bargold sensibilities.  Bingo!  MTG elevated the images into the most clever, award-winning copy and advertisements.

CBS Art Director and Stylist, Steven Skopick, would pull his prop closet experience and sense of style, to populate the set design.  After my numerous Sandra Lee Food Network TV shows & Magazine Photo Shoot sets & tablescape collaborations, Steve & I spoke the same language.

Dream team locked in, Bargold’s talented builders built the storage units for their client, all the while we were styling the “set”.

Flipping the switch; this time MTG Creative Group headed up the action and brought Jillphotography in on their major project: to capture the sleekest lobby and amenities on Jersey City’s Washington Boulevard, inside Newport Tower.

Challenges:
1.  Proximity to Holland Tunnel, impeding Drone flights.
2.  Flying Inside new glass lobby with fragile art , fixtures & the amenity rooms.

Client needs drove the walk-throughs, resulting in some of our stills thrusting creative forces to block and shoot video, with nerves of steel, evident on the Newport Tower's website's dramatic opening page.
